Amnesty International calls on the Egyptian authorities to stop the “continuous crackdowns” on the media

Amnesty International called on the Egyptian authorities to end what it described as “continuous crackdowns” against the media, to release imprisoned journalists and allow journalists to carry out their work “without fear.

This was stated in an Amnesty International report on the press in Egypt, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.

The organization stressed in its report that in recent years, the Egyptian authorities raided at least five media outlets, blocked hundreds of local and international websites, and the number of journalists imprisoned reached 37, including 20 who were imprisoned because of their direct journalistic work.

“Dozens of journalists and media workers in Egypt have been subjected to a series of abuses,” said Philip Luther, director of research at the WHO Middle East and North Africa office.
